I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore — Why This Happens (and What to Do About It)

"I don’t feel like myself anymore"
There’s a certain way people say this. Not dramatic, not extreme. Just… off. “I don’t feel like myself.” “I can’t really explain it.” “I just don’t feel how I used to.” And more often than not, it creeps in gradually.
You’re still getting on with things: work, home, life, looking after everyone else. From the outside, everything probably looks the same. But underneath it, something feels different. Your energy isn’t what it was. Your mood feels more fragile, your patience is thinner, sleep doesn’t leave you feeling properly rested. You don’t quite recognise yourself anymore.
If that resonates, you’re not alone. I see this a lot in my clinic and online work with clients all across the UK, and there is usually a reason for it.
Why Don’t I Feel Like Myself Anymore?
It’s very rarely one thing suddenly going wrong. More often, it’s a combination of factors that have been quietly building in the background over time. The sort of shifts that are easy to brush off at first….until they start to affect your energy, mood, and overall wellbeing.
Stress and Its Impact on Energy, Mood and Health
Almost everyone I work with initially says they’re not particularly stressed. They’re just busy, capable, and used to getting on with things. But the body doesn’t differentiate between mental load, emotional pressure, or physical demands; it all registers in the same way.
Over time, this can have a real impact on energy levels, sleep quality, mood, and digestion. You might find yourself feeling wired but tired, flat but restless, or like you’re functioning but not really thriving. It’s subtle at first, but it builds.
Blood Sugar Imbalance and How It Affects How You Feel
This is something I come back to again and again. You might feel like you eat quite well, but patterns like skipping meals, leaving long gaps between eating, not getting enough protein, or grabbing something quick on the go can lead to dips and spikes in blood sugar.
Blood sugar imbalance doesn’t just affect hunger. It can influence your energy levels, your mood, your ability to concentrate, and even feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. It’s often misunderstood, but in many cases, it's simply physiology, not a lack of willpower.
Hormones and Why You Feel “Off”
Hormones do play a role, but they’re rarely the only piece of the puzzle. As we move through our 30s and 40s, the body can become more sensitive to stress, poor sleep, and blood sugar fluctuations. Things that once felt manageable don’t feel quite so easy anymore.
That doesn’t mean your body is failing. It just means it needs a different level of support.
Why Long-Term Depletion Affects How You Feel
This is often the underlying thread. Years of putting yourself last, rushing, under-fuelling, and pushing through without much pause can leave the body depleted.
It doesn’t always show up as a dramatic crash. More often, it’s a steady feeling that something isn’t quite right, that sense of “I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
How to Start Feeling Like Yourself Again
This is usually the point where people expect a long list of things to fix everything. In reality, the most effective approach is much simpler, and far more realistic.
It’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about doing a few key things consistently.
Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection
You don’t need a complete overhaul. What tends to make the biggest difference is consistency: eating regularly, including protein with meals, avoiding long gaps without food, and creating small moments in your day to slow things down.
These small, steady changes can have a powerful impact on your energy, mood, and overall health.
Listen to Your Body’s Signals
It’s not just about what you’re doing, but how your body is responding. Your energy, mood, sleep, and digestion are all forms of feedback. They’re not things to ignore, but signals that help guide what your body needs.
Get Personalised Support
When everything feels a bit muddled, it can be difficult to piece it together on your own. You don’t need more conflicting advice; you need clarity: the right approach, tailored to you, your lifestyle, and your symptoms.
A Final Thought
It’s very easy to normalise this feeling and assume it’s just how life is now. But feeling constantly tired, flat, anxious, or not quite yourself isn’t something you have to settle for.
With the right support, things can start to shift, often more quickly than you might expect.
If this sounds like you, and you’re tired of second-guessing what your body needs, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
