I Know What I Should Be Doing… I Just Can’t Seem to Do It

Struggling to eat well even though you know what to do? Here’s why healthy eating can feel so hard in real life and how to make it simpler.
There’s a certain kind of frustration that comes up a lot in clinic. It isn’t to do with a lack of motivation, nor a lack of care. Most people I see are trying really hard and often say something like “I know what I should be doing, but I can’t seem to actually do it.”
These kinds of healthy eating struggles are incredibly common.
More often than not, it isn’t about willpower at all. It’s life getting in the way, and the sooner we can step away from feeling guilty or ashamed of a lack of progress, the better.
It’s Not That You Don’t Care - Life Is Just Full!
Most people I work with are juggling a lot.
Work, family, the mental load of remembering everything for everyone…
Food just becomes one more thing to think about. So, when things feel busy or overwhelming, it makes sense that eating well slips down the priority list. This is the reality of busy lifestyle nutrition.
Not because it doesn’t matter, but because everything feels like it matters.
“I Don’t Have Time”
This one comes up all the time.
But often, it’s not really about time, but it’s about having to make too many decisions when you’re already tired.
What to cook. What’s “healthy.”What you’ve got in the fridge. What everyone else will eat.
It’s exhausting before you’ve even started, and often a big part of why it’s so hard to eat healthy in everyday life.
When Everything Feels a Bit Disorganised
You get to the end of the day, there’s no plan, nothing prepped…and you just need something quick.
So you grab what’s easiest.
Again, this is completely understandable, but this is usually where people start to feel frustrated with themselves, as they’ve somehow “failed” the day.
The reality is, there wasn’t a tried-and-tested system in place to support them. Not a lack of effort, just a lack of the right nutrition support.
"I Don’t Even Know Where to Start"
This is often one of the first things people say to me at the beginning, and it's completely understandable - there is just so much information out there now.
Conflicting advice. Different diets. Rules, restrictions, trends…
It’s no wonder people feel stuck!
Because when everything feels important, it’s hard to know what actually matters to you. This is the important bit and the beauty of personalised nutrition – it is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it’s where building realistic, healthy habits really begins.
What If It Didn’t Have to Be So Complicated?
This is usually the point where things start to shift.
Not by doing everything perfectly but by simplifying things in a way that fits into your personal situation and lifestyle.
Small changes. Clear direction. A way of eating that actually fits into your life.
A Thought to Leave You With
If this feels familiar, it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong.
It’s usually just that you haven’t had the right support or structure yet and that’s exactly where things can start to change.
